Her work takes shape in reference to the social, cultural, historical and economic contexts and questions conceptions and misconceptions about the dimensions of contemporary society and culture. She teaches classes at the University of Regina and First Nations University in Fine Arts as sessional instructor. She is also Artist in Residence for the Isabel Johnson Shelter, a safe house in Regina. Barbara is taking part in The  Open Engagement conference at Portland, Oregon, from May 14 -17. This Conference is an initiative of Portland, Oregon’s  State University’s Art and Social Practice MFA program at Pacific Northwest College of Art. This conference features three nationally and internationally renowned artists: Mark Dion, Amy Franceschini, and Nils Norman. Barbara is one of the selected artists involved in a “For Open Engagement: Making Things, Making Things Better, Making Things Worse”. For the conference, Barbara will create a Shelter, a series of site-specific installations based on her work as Artist in Residence for the Isabel Johnson Shelter. The unique work she does within this residency context runs counter to art practices which seek out publicity and promotion, reviews and critique. The public was invited to a visual display of Barbara’s work at Silver Willow Gallery in Eastend on Friday, May 28th, 2010.
