Marita Dachsel invited the public to a pot luck and poetry reading in the garden of the Stegner House on Monday July 26th. It was a beautiful clear summer evening , the food was good and the conversation lively. Marita read two poems from her 2007 collection, All Things Said and Doneand then several from her work in progress - poems from Glossolalia the voices of the wives of Joseph Smith, the founder of the Mormon faith. She shared interesting samples from her extensive research and everyone participated in the ensuing discussion of Joseph Smith and his 34 wives, the golden tablets and the trek west. While at the Stegner House Marita has also been working on her first attempt at fiction.Marita's first book of poetry, All Things Said & Done, was published by Caitlin Press in 2007 and was short-listed for a ReLit Award and her chapbook, Eliza Roxcy Snow, was recently published by Edmonton’s red nettle press. She has an MFA in Creative Writing from UBC and her writing has been published widely in Canadian literary journals. While at the Wallace Stegner House, she will be finishing her new poetry manuscript, Glossolalia, in which she gives voice to the thirty-four polygamous wives of Joseph Smith, founder of the Mormon Church, as well as working on the first draft of a novel. After twelve years in Vancouver, and most of her life in BC, she moved to Edmonton in Fall 2007 with her husband, playwright Kevin Kerr, and their two boys.
