Stegner House Event June'09 Mari-Lou is a poet who makes a living as a science/corporate writer. She grew up in Saskatoon, and moved back . Most of her family are there, as well as an extremely supportive writing community. The prairies have remained her favourite—and most inspiring— landscape. After living in inner city urban environments, she feel that she really has “come home” in all senses of that phrase. Most of her books were drafted at SWG Saskatchewan Writers/Artists colonies, and "I feel honored to be the colony committee chair, as I am now able to give back something to the community that has been so supportive of—and crucial to—my work. The three people who first encouraged me to write were from Saskatchewan: Gerry Cook, my high school English teacher; Anne Szumigalski, who took me into her poetry group when I was 18; and Ken Mitchell, my instructor at Fort San Summer School for the Arts in 1971. "Mari-Lou says "I am keenly interested in environmental issues, science and technology, and my science writing has informed much of my work. My latest book Suicide Psalms has been shortlisted for best poetry in the Sask Book Awards. Viral Suite received much critical acclaim, and I was awarded a funded residency in Can Serrat, Spain in part based on work from that book. This spring I was fortunate to be invited to read and present a paper at an international Poetic Ecologies conference in Brussels. After a hectic summer and fall, I am looking for a longer-term residency to work on my next poetry manuscript. Friends and colleagues Shelley Leedahl, Jenn Still and many others have spoken so highly of Stegner House and the spirit of the place that I really want to experience it for myself. here three years ago after having lived most of my adult life in Edmonton, Toronto and Vancouver.
